Architect vs Structural Engineer: What’s the Difference?

Architectural firm Dorset min

It goes without saying, but the process of constructing a building is far from simple. From bricklayers to civil engineers, a lot of people are needed to make sure the end result will bring the initial designs to life in a way that’s both safe and practical.

Architects and structural engineers both play a key part in the design and construction of a building. They work together to oversee the entire process, from drawing up the blueprints to determining the right materials to use.

David James Architects & Partners has established itself as a leading name in architectural design work across the South. Read on for our introduction to the roles of architects and structural engineers, where we cover the responsibilities of each and explore the differences between the two.

What Is an Architect?

An architect is someone who designs and plans the construction of buildings and other structures. Their main responsibility is to make sure the final building is visually appealing, fit for its intended purpose, and - most importantly - safe to be in.

Architects work closely with clients to develop a design that meets their needs, while also considering factors such as environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and building codes and regulations.

Architects use a variety of tools and techniques to create their designs, including computer-aided design (CAD) software, physical models, and sketches. They also work with engineers, contractors, and other professionals to keep the construction process running smoothly.

It is worth noting that the term “architect” is protected, and a person can only call themselves an architect if they are registered on the Architects Registration Board (ARB). While other professionals may provide the same services, they cannot legally call themselves an architect unless they are ARB registered. David James Architects are both ARB and RIBA registered.

What Is a Structural Engineer?

Simply put, a structural engineer is someone who makes sure buildings stay upright! They specialise in the design, analysis, and evaluation of a variety of structures, typically buildings, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure. Structural engineers are responsible for guaranteeing the structures are strong, stable, and able to withstand the loads that they’ll be subjected to throughout their lifespan.

Structural engineers work with architects and other professionals to make sure the structural design of a building is appropriate for the intended use and that it complies with building codes and regulations. They use advanced mathematical and engineering techniques to analyse the behaviour of structures under different loads, such as wind, earthquake, and live loads from people and equipment.

In addition to designing new structures, structural engineers also evaluate existing structures for safety and fitness for use. They may perform inspections, testing, and analysis to determine the structural integrity of existing buildings and recommend repairs or modifications to ensure that they remain safe and functional.

What’s the Difference Between an Architect and a Structural Engineer?

The key difference between an architect and a structural engineer is their respective areas of expertise.

An architect focuses on the design and aesthetics of a building. They create designs around the specifications of the clients, while also taking into account factors such as environmental sustainability and building codes. Architects may create plans and blueprints for a building, including floor plans, elevations, and 3D models, and they usually work with builders, contractors, and other professionals to oversee the construction process.

A structural engineer, on the other hand, focuses on the structural integrity of a building. They use their knowledge of physics, mathematics, and materials science to calculate whether a structure can withstand the loads and stresses it will experience throughout its lifespan. Structural engineers may also design and analyse the structural elements of a building, such as columns, beams, and foundations.
